John established ImagInsight as a family portrait photography business in 2003. It operates from a shared studio established by John as the Clifton Hill Photographic Studio in 2007, with image processing and general business functions at 270 McKean Street, Fitzroy North. The business is based on a significant ongoing investment in the latest high end digital equipment and software.

Prior to taking up photography John had an extensive career in accounting and information technology, culminating in nineteen years as a management consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers, the world’s largest professional services organization, the last eleven years as a Partner of the Firm. During this period he lived and worked extensively in South East Asia. John took early retirement at 55 to pursue his passion for photography.

John graduated from the International College of Commercial Photography in South Melbourne in 2003. He has a Master of Photography with the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) and is an active participant in its professional development program. In 2006 he also became an Associate of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP). These appointments are based on annual portfolio assessments by senior peers within the photographic industry. His national and international level awards to date are:
• 2005-2010 AIPP – 1 silver distinction award, 13 silver awards
• 2006-2008 NZIPP – 15 bronze awards
• 2008-2009 International Aperture Awards – 1 silver award, 8 bronze awards
• 2010 EPSON International Photographic Pano Awards – 3 bronze awards

The photographic business has spread into the corporate sector to embrace executive portraiture, annual reports, events and products, where his extensive business management and consulting experience add value to assignments beyond the basic capture of the image.

The next extension of John’s new career was into photographic art. His first solo exhibition entitled “China: beyond the icons” ran over the 2007 Chinese New Year period at the Chinese Museum in Melbourne, and has since been shown at the opening of new Chinese section of the Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame in Kalgoorlie and the Daylesford Fotobiennale. Over 20 limited edition prints have been sold, generating over $8,500 in gross sales.

In 2008 John produced his first Art Calendar, a pictorial representation of East Timor with net proceeds of over $4,000 supporting Rotary Club of Melbourne projects in East Timor. The 2010 calendar focused on the drought ravaged town of Rochester in the Campaspe district of north western Victoria and delivered net proceeds of over $8,000 targeted at needy local farming families through the Rotary Club of Rochester.

Outside of photography John cycles, plays golf, cooks, ponders the odd glass of red, and is a member of the Rotary Club of Melbourne (Australia’s oldest and largest) where, of course, he is the Club photographer.
